Out of the Box

For Dezeen x Samsung, we developed a concept inspired by Samsung’s Eco-Package initiative, reimagining TV packaging as more than just waste. Our design transforms cardboard boxes into functional, adaptable and playful household items, giving them a second life while promoting creativity, smart design, and sustainable living. Each piece can be arranged to suit different spaces and needs, turning packaging into a versatile, interactive part of the home.

Our homes have never had to support such a wide range of activities: working, exercising, homeschooling, e-hanging-out with friends, and more. These new demands are reshaping the way we use our living spaces.

The design proposal transforms cardboard packaging into a 3D modular screen – both a dividing and uniting element. The screen facilitates multi-programming in apartments, offices, or shared interiors, creating an environment where people can co-create harmoniously. It can serve as a backdrop for video calls, a lightweight storage solution, or a shade for ambient lighting. More than a functional object, it provides a surface for people to physically interact with – and with each other – inviting connection and collaboration.

We imagine the screen as a 3D pinboard or calendar: a space to get creative, add or remove items, organize events, map ideas, pin tasks, or sketch freely. It’s also an opportunity for a digital detox, encouraging tactile engagement. By repurposing TV packaging into this hand-crafted screen, we close the loop – transforming one screen into another and bringing tactility and human connection back into everyday life.

To maximize the packaging material, we designed three modular cardboard units, each corresponding to a different packaging type. This creates three variations of the screen, offering versatility in placement, rotation, and configuration—whether leaning against a wall, standing independently, or integrated into a larger setup. How the screen is used is left to the creativity of the home.

Aligned with a circular economy, this design isn’t a static product but a dynamic object for ongoing customization, exploration, and playful engagement. It adapts to the evolving ways we live, work, and connect.
